I have always been a lover of quilts. But because I’m not a very detailed artist — hence the reason I love mixed media — I didn’t think I could ever accomplish creating a quilt. Well, for whatever reason, a few months ago I started researching what it takes to create a full on quilt. My research showed me something called Quilt As You Go (QAYG) method. It’s very suited for those that have a regular sewing machine — something without all the bells and whistles. Well, after completing 3 quilts the past month (all as gifts) I have created my own version of the QAYG method. That’s what is so cool about art. You can adapt it to what works for you! In case you don’t know me yet, yes, I’m a rule breaker when it comes to art.
So, in order to practice my quilting skills and learn from those rule followers, I’ve been participating in the Bari J Quiltalong, which is being hosted by the adorable Melanie Traylor of Southern Charm Quilts. For those of you that don’t follow the fabric designer industry, Bari J is an artist that designs beautiful fabrics. I got to know Bari along with some other amazing ladies about a year ago in a private Facebook group. I just love how Bari can paint, scan and then fine tune her artwork into surface design work. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! I’m also a HUGE believer in making the most of your artwork. (Stay tuned for a future course on that very subject from me.) Anyways, through following Bari J I was introduced to Melanie Traylor who is an amazing quilt maker. I just LOVE her low volume quilts. So, today I’m sharing some pictures of the quilt along I’m participating in. Most of my fabrics used in this quilt are those by Bari J. Total swoon-worthy!
So, this is how much I have done so far. We receive new block patterns every 2 weeks. And better yet, Melanie includes awesome videos for the complete newbies!
This was my very first block. And here are some more closeups of the others:
Fun stuff! I’m loving the freedom of choosing colors I absolutely love for this project, since I plan on keeping this quilt for myself.
If you would like to join in on the Bari J Quiltalong, it’s not too late! Here is the link to all the goodness:
